For most of my life, I have called Romania home. But I am happy to say that another country, the United States, now holds a special place in my heart, thanks to the Internship Program that I am currently attending!
My name is Giulia Sarah Rusu, I am 23 years old and my journey to the U.S. began during my summer breaks, while enrolled at The Academy of Economic Studies University of Business and Tourism. After graduation, I learned about the opportunity to participate in the internship program for 12 months which will allow me to receive hands-on experience in the hospitality field, further my professional development while experiencing the U.S. culture. During the program in the field of my studies, I would put theoretical skills about hospitality and tourism into practice – something I did not have the opportunity to do previously during my education. The idea thrilled me! I mean, who wouldn’t be excited for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity like this?
After connecting with several resorts offering these types of programs, I needed an organization that would help me through the entire process and tailor the program based on my preferences and career goals. That’s how I learned about TransUSA Exchange and the organization was highly recommended by the resorts I connected with. From start to finish, they helped me with the paperwork and offered a very quick and straightforward application process, responded to all my questions, and made sure that I have a successful program and overall experience. Seriously, I can’t recommend them enough!
The resort that offered the best program for me ended up being Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno, Nevada. The moment I set foot at the resort, I fell in love with the environment and my team. Grand Sierra Resort is a wonderful place to gain valuable experience because it features nearly 2,000 hotel rooms and suites, the largest casino floor in Northern Nevada, and the best entertainment and nightlife in Reno. Of course, when I started, I was a little nervous – as anyone who just moved across the world would be! But everyone was so patient with me and made me feel like a valuable part of the team from day one. They’ve taught me so much about hotel operations, including LMS operations systems and, most importantly, customer service.
I’ve not only had an amazing training experience at Grand Sierra Resort, but I’ve also had the best time during my hours off the clock. I’ve developed some amazing friendships with American colleagues and other interns from Mexico, Turkey, Dominican Republic, Philippines, and Bolivia who came to the U.S. for the same reasons as me. During the time off, we participated in so many fun activities. We celebrated the 4th of July by enjoying fireworks, went to Hot August Nights festival, America’s largest classic car show and Rock N ’Roll, volunteered for the local animal shelter, went to shows and the theater, and so much more. We also had the opportunity to travel outside of Reno. We went to Las Vegas and explored Los Angeles. But the best travel experience of all was spending Christmas in New York City! It was pure magic.
Throughout my time I learned so much about the American culture. Americans value individuality, equality, diversity, unity, liberty, and self-government. Through these, you can really see how it became the land of opportunities. Americans come in all shapes, colors, religions, and languages – which is so inspiring and fun to be surrounded by. I also got to learn about their culture through their food. I tried sweets, spaghetti tacos, chili dogs, and all the unique American burgers and loaded fries I could find!
Overall, the experience of coming to Reno Nevada has changed my life forever. I had the opportunity to learn things that will help me advance my career and I am so grateful for every person who was a part of my journey. I learned how to be on my own and be responsible for every decision I make. I got to learn all about hospitality, hotel operations, and customer service. I have honed my skills in understanding guests and being able to respond to their demands with patience and empathy.
Grand Sierra Resort has offered me so much education and training and I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to be part of their Front Office team. This experience will always hold a special place in my heart and has a big impact in shaping my professional development. I would recommend this internship opportunity to everyone who wants to get out of their comfort zone and learn! This is the type of experience you’ll never have twice – it is truly unique and will change your life forever!
